The 5 Most Economical Used Pickup Trucks in the UK in 2022

The top 5 most economical used pick-up trucks in the UK in 2022

Once again, we’ve set out to find the five most fuel-efficient used pick-up trucks money can buy in the UK this year. And this time around, our calculations are a bit different.

If you want to run your pick-up truck as efficiently as possible, and save money on diesel, one of the first questions you’re likely to ask is: which pick-up trucks promise the best economy?

To help you find the most eco fuel efficient trucks, we’ve trawled through online fuel economy figures for you in a quest to find the UK's most fuel-efficient used pick-up trucks on sale today.

Firstly, we set out a few ground rules. There’s simply so much variation out there - different engines, power outputs, cab sizes and transmission - everything gets complicated very quickly. So to make things more manageable, we’re concentrating on the following:

  • Double-cab trucks only
  • UK-market only (no imports)
  • Trucks up to 6 years old
  • Manual transmission

Read on if you’d like to find out what these figures mean, and how we calculated our top 5. But in the meantime, let’s get to the results.

RESULTS

According to online WLTP fuel consumption figures, here are the top five UK used pick-up trucks that offer you the best fuel economy in 2022:

1: 2019- Ford Ranger

2.0 EcoBlue 170 168bhp

WLTP fuel consumption: Min 39.2 mpg; Max 40.9 mpg; Our average calculated 40.05 mpg

Honourable mention for Automatic gearboxes: 2.0 Ecoblue 210 213bhp

WLTP fuel consumption: Min 36.2 mpg; Max 36.7 mpg; Our average calculated 36.45 mpg

2: 2016- Nissan Navara

2.3 dCi 163PS

WLTP fuel consumption: Min 34.0 mpg; Max 45.6 mpg; Our average calculated 39.8 mpg

3: 2020- Mitsubishi L200

2.3 150bhp (4Life model)

WLTP fuel consumption: Min 31.0 mpg; Max 37.2 mpg; Our average calculated 34.1 mpg

4: 2017- Isuzu D-Max

1.9 TD 162bhp

WLTP fuel consumption: Min 27.6 mpg; Max 39.4 mpg; Our average calculated 33.5 mpg

5: 2016- Toyota Hilux

2.8 201bhp

WLTP fuel consumption: Min 31.3 mpg; Max 33.2 mpg; Our average calculated 32.25 mpg

So which is best for you?

In first place comes the 2019-onwards Ford Ranger. To clarify, this is with the lower-powered, 168bhp version of Ford’s 2.0 EcoBlue engine - the highest spec Ranger you can get with this engine is a Limited.

If you want a Wildtrak or a Raptor, you’ll get the higher-powered 213bhp engine - but the good news (apart from the extra power, obviously) is that this, too, is still fuel-efficient for the class. In fact, it would still rank in 3rd place in our list, strictly speaking. We’re concentrating on manual transmission here, but this engine was worth a mention as the most economical automatic pickup truck choice we found.

On to second place, and we have the ever dependable Nissan Navara. Achieving a good blend of economy and power, the 2.3 163PS engine is the one we’ve mentioned. We couldn’t find WLTP-related figures for the more powerful 190PS version of this engine found in Tekna models. But according to our previous research last year, this version had almost exactly the same fuel economy as the lower-powered unit, so we’d expect both engine variants to be together in 2nd place.

The new Mitsubishi L200 comes in at 3rd for 2022, with the 150bhp 2.3 engine available in the entry-level 4Life version of the L200. If you’re after the added style and additional comfort of a Warrior or Barbarian spec truck, the average WLTP fuel economy drops to 29.2mpg according to our calculations - so not making our top 5, but not far off either!

Finishing off the top 5 are the Isuzu D-Max in 4th and Toyota Hilux in 5th. Perhaps the most surprising thing here is that it’s actually the more powerful, 201bhp 2.8-litre Toyota version that made it into the top five. Good news for those of you who want a blend of power and economy - although the lower-powered 2.4-litre Toyota engine also performs well, with an average WLTP economy figure of 30.1mpg according to our research. The D-Max, meanwhile, only comes with one engine - but with a 4th place it’s evidently efficient as well as capable.

How did we work this out?

Things have changed in recent years.

You may be familiar with the traditional method of measuring fuel economy. Up until recently, manufacturers tested their vehicles in laboratory conditions. They would then give us a figure for fuel consumption in 'urban' and 'extra urban' environments - along with a figure for combined fuel economy.

You’re probably also familiar with how the laboratory-based method above is floored by its nature. It doesn’t always get close to real world fuel economy experienced by the vehicles’ eventual owners out on the road.

That’s where WLTP comes in. WLTP fuel figures are from a new standard of testing that includes real-world driving. They’re designed to give a range of fuel economy figures that take into account different speeds and conditions, and are aimed at providing more realistic, achievable fuel economy figures. (And in case you were wondering, WLTP stands for Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure. Snappy).

So for 2022, we decided we should move with the times and concentrate on these WLTP figures for our top 5.

We took the lowest and highest recorded WLTP economy figures for each available truck. The low figures come from low speed testing and the high figures from higher speed - very roughly equating to what you might expect in a city and out on the open road respectively. We then took the average of these two figures, to achieve our own final average fuel consumption figure for each truck. It was this figure that decided where (and if) the truck appeared in our top 5. Simple! Ish.
